7 Tips For Burning In Your Fireplace

Wood Burning Fireplace

There’s no feeling that compares to warming up by the fire on a chilly day. It’s that extra cozy feeling that brings comfort and togetherness for you and your family. Safely burning a fire in your home is key! Here are some helpful tips to make sure you and your loved ones stay safe while enjoying the heat.

7 Tips For A Safe & Efficient Fire

  1. Make sure your fireplace has had its annual inspection and sweep, performed by professionals.
  2. Before starting a fire, make sure all of your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are in proper working order.
  3. Make sure your damper is fully open, so as to not allow carbon monoxide and particulate matter back into your home.
  4. Choose the right wood! Stay away from greenwood (or freshly cut wood), such as pine; they can contain up to 100% moisture (or 50% water weight). Go with seasoned wood, such as oak. Seasoned wood contains less than 20% moisture.
  5. Try to avoid artificial logs, they produce a large amount of creosote. Use some crumpled-up newspaper and kindling for starting fires in your fireplace.
  6. To get the most out of your fire, run ceiling fans clockwise at low speeds to redirect the warm air from the ceiling into the living space.
  7. Get cozy and enjoy yourself!
